Ross Purdy was born in Snohomish, Washington. He graduated from Snohomish High School and received a B.A. degree from Whitman College. He attended Washington State University and then transferred to and received a Ph.D. (1971) from the University of Southern California. He taught at the University of North Carolina for seven years before moving to then Texas A&I - Corpus Christi. His academic specializations include demography, ecology, criminology and urban sociology. He has completed a number of contract research projects

His other interests include sailing, dog training and flying. Dr. Purdy is married to Joyce Purdy. Their daughter Kit is currently in medical school.
