Alpha Kappa Delta is a non-secret, democratic, international, sociology honor society.

It had its specific beginning in the fall of 1920 in the Department of Sociology at the University of Southern California. On November 21, 1920, the departmental chairman, Dr. Emory S. Bogardus, organized a group of 14 persons composed of the faculty and graduate students of the department to form the first chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta for the purpose of exchange of ideas concerning sociological projects.

The name, Alpha Kappa Delta, was devised by Dr. Borgardus and adopted by the chapter members. It represents the first letters of three Greek words: namely,

          Anthropon (mankind)
          Katamanthaneion (to investigate thoroughly or to conduct research)
          Diakonesein (for the purpose of service).

The name therefore implies "social research for the purpose of service."

The requirements for election into AKD are as follows:

  • you must be in the upper 35% of your class in scholarship;
  • you must have a general scholastic average of at least 3.0 in all sociology courses;
  • you must have completed at least 10 credit hours of graded sociology courses at TAMU-CC

Applications for AKD are solicited from majors and minors each semester. There is a one-time initiation fee of $25, which also covers the cost of a one year subscription to Sociological Inquiry, the official journal of AKD. New inductees are honored at a reception hosted by the Sociology Department at the end of each semester.
